Sweet and Savory Smoothies

Sweet Smoothies
Pick ingredients from each of the four categories and follow these basic instructions: In a blender, combine 1 fruit, 1 liquid, 1 sweetener, and 1 spice. Add 6 ice cubes and blend until smooth and frothy.
Makes 1 serving

FRUITS
Mango, 1 cup sliced
Banana, 1 cup sliced
Strawberries, 1 cup halved
Cantaloupe, 1 cup cubed
Pineapple, 1 cup cubed

LIQUIDS
Yogurt, plain low-fat, 1 cup
Buttermilk, 1 cup
Milk, low-fat (1%) or nonfat, 1 cup
Soymilk, unflavored, 1 cup
Tofu, soft silken, 1/2 cup

SWEETENERS
Honey, 1 Tbsp
Brown sugar, 2 tsp
Maple syrup, 1 Tbsp

SPICES
Cinnamon, 1/2 tsp
Nutmeg, 1/4 tsp
Ground ginger, 1/2 tsp

Savory Smoothies
Pick ingredients from each of the four categories and follow these basic instructions: In a blender, combine 1 vegetable, 1 liquid, 1 flavoring, and 1 herb. Add 6 ice cubes and blend until smooth and frothy. Makes 1 serving

VEGETABLES
Cucumber, 1 cup peeled, seeded, and sliced
Zucchini, 1 cup sliced
Green beans, 1 cup cooked
Avocado, 1/4 cup cubes

LIQUIDS
Yogurt, plain low-fat, 1 cup
Buttermilk, 1 cup
Milk, low-fat (1%) or nnfat, 1 cup + 1/4 tsp salt
Soymilk, unflavored, 1 cup + 1/4 tsp salt

FLAVORINGS
Red onion, 1/4 cup chopped
Scallions, 1/4 cup sliced
Tomato, 1/2 cup chopped
Chives, 2 Tbsp chopped

HERBS
Tarragon, 1/2 tsp
Cayenne, 1/8 tsp
Fresh dill, 2 Tbsp chopped
Cumin, 1/2 tsp
Fresh basil, 1 Tbsp chopped
